Feet in the Clouds: A Story of Fell Running and Obsession

posted 1 Feb 2012 12:59 by Tim Hadfield   [ updated 1 Feb 2012 13:01 ]

The concept of fell running is simple: a long-distance race that includes running up and down several tall mountains. Though rarely making the sports pages, it is a mass-participation sport in areas like the Lake District and Snowdonia - indeed, race organisers turn competitors away so that fragile mountain uplands are not irrevocably damaged by thundering feet. Fixtures like the annual Ben Nevis and Snowdon races, or the Borrowdale and Wasdale fell runs in the Lakeland valleys (20-mile-plus marathons), have remained local events attended by the whole community - the runners back at work the next day shearing sheep. Now, Richard Askwith explores the world of fell-running in the only legitimate way: by donning his Ron Hill vest and studded shoes and spending a season running as many of the great fell races as he can, from Borrowdale to Ben Nevis: an arduous schedule that tests the very limits of one's stamina and courage. Along the way he also meets the greats of fell-running - like the remarkable Joss Naylor, who to celebrate his sixtieth birthday ran the Lakeland fells non-stop for a week, and Kenny Stuart, the wiry Keswick man whose astounding records still stand for many of the top races, and Bill Teasdale, one of the sport's pioneers, still living in the same tiny cottage in the northern Lakes. And ultimately Askwith's obsession drove him to attempt the ultimate challenge: a circuit of the Lake District peaks within 24 hours. This is a portrait of one of the few sports to have remained implacably amateur, and utterly true to its roots .

I found this book by accident whilst flicking through various sports books at lunch. It is brilliant and I highly recommend it!

Help - Marshals required for the Cranleigh 15/21 on 25th March

posted 1 Feb 2012 12:56 by Brian Vine

A team of volunteers are required to mark out the course in Cranleigh starting at 7.00am! The equipment is to be collected on Saturday from 18 Hitherwood at a time to be agreed.

Marshals will be needed at the following road crossings: Overford Drive, Village Way and Knowle Lane. If anyone is available before the start to give assistance to runners with directions to the various facilities: Bandroom, Leisure Centre, Scout and Guide HQ that would be much appreciated.

100 places left at the Leith Hill Half

posted 11 Jan 2012 08:55 by Cranleigh Runners

Dear fellow-athlete,

This is just to let you know that there are now less than 100 places
left at the Leith Hill Half on Sunday 18 March, starting in Dorking.
I expect that the places will be filled within the next 10 days.

Details and entry are via http://www.trionium.com/leithhillhalf/

After the race is full, it's full: there is no waiting list and
strictly no entries on the day.

I know you've entered in the past, and if you haven't already entered
this year, then now's your chance! This email is going out to 1053
people who have previously entered the race.

You will also find details of the Wife Carrying Race (same day, same
place) at http://www.trionium.com/wife - which has, bizarrely, just
been named 'Britain's top Adventure Race 2011' by Runner's World.

See you on the hills...

Kind regards,

Rob

Windsor MABAC - Free Entry for Members

posted 3 Jan 2012 06:51 by Cranleigh Runners

CONFIRMED - The Windsor MABAC run is scheduled for 8th Jan 2012 at 11am. We had a good turnout by Cranleigh club runners last year.  The first race in the MABAC Cross Country season in the beautiful Windsor Great Park. This one is on the road and not cross country with a full course of 8 miles.

As the Blacknest Car Park requires payment, there will be assistance from The Crown Estate at the entrance.  They will have someone on duty to take money.  You will need £4 for parking and the machine does not take £2 coins. I suggest we encourage as much car sharing as possible!
There will be two options for runners again this year:  the full 8 mile road circuit and an out-and-back 4 mile(ish) run.  The latter will turn at the junction/marshal just before the 2 mile marker on the main route.
Juniors not wishing to do the 4 miles will have separate shorter off-road circuit.
