posted 17 Sep 2013, 13:26 by Cranleigh Runners

Could you please alert your members to the fourth running of the above race which commemorates the life of the great runner Alf Shrubb who was born in nearby Slinfold and his family originated from the Alfold and Ewhurst area so this is very much a local success story. I have attached an entry form should any of your members wish to participate. Hope to see them on the day,

Regards

Alfie Shrubb was born in Slinfold, West Sussex and was one of the finest runners this country has ever produced. Between 1903 and 1904 he held 15 world records from 2000 yards to the one-hour distance record. On Nov. 5th in 1904 he broke seven world records in one race and during his career won 1,100 of his 1,800 races. Despite this he is relatively unknown, only in recent years being accepted into the UK Athletics Hall of Fame. This race is to commemorate this great athlete.
